About the film

when the ordinary begins.

Dinsdagochtend is an observational short film about love after the first rush of falling in love.

Story

a place in the sun.

When Yael and Isaak move into their first real home together, their neighbours over the back fence, Nicholas and Linde, who are nearing retirement, unwittingly become their mirror.

Nicholas and Linde have built a life of calm and routine together. At first Yael and Isaak seem the picture of young love, but as time passes they begin to resemble the older couple more and more. Patterns emerge or return, and they find themselves asking that age-old question: “Is this it?”

Style

within fixed frames.

The film unfolds over a year in the life of both couples, following their relationships through the seasons. Life in a terraced house provides an important frame: the house stands for the warmth and security of a settled life, but also for confinement and isolation.

Visually, the film uses defined spaces, fixed frames and repeated actions, with subtle shifts gradually coming into view. Much of what happens takes place off-screen; we hear things through walls and from the other side of the fence, like lives both close by and far away.

From the director

watching what changes.

So many films about love seem caught between extremes: either the fairy tale, the magic of meeting, the “will they, won't they?” of boy meets girl, or the drama of a breakup, infidelity and heartbreak. Rarely do they show everything in between, even though so much of our lives happens there.

With dinsdagochtend, I want to make that in-between space visible; to show love as something that includes doubt and familiar patterns, that sometimes means drifting apart, losing and finding each other again, or at least trying to, or wishing you knew how.

Together we lose ourselves in the sun's endless rising, and sometimes it makes me forget who we once were.
